When I first heard that Scott Brown was going to be sent out of the country, I was happy for the loss. I'm still happy for us, but I'm sorry NZ is getting him.

Meanwhile, even in the midst of the Viet Nam War, the anti war marches, and all the angst of the late 60's and 70's, I never felt as uncomfortable about our government as I do now. It feels like we're being managed by incompetents and ne'er-do-wells. Trump is stupid, scary, and dangerous, and he has surrounded himself with self-serving millionaires.

Though I foolishly hope, sadly, it hasn't changed any from last week. I get a headache from watching the news, but there's a macabre fascination that keeps me riveted to every irrational moment of this train wreck of a government.

It is more and more like Hunger Games meets Handmaid's Tale every day. Or when Caligula was in power. Everyone knows he's utterly mad and idiotic, but they're so bent on keeping their own little sphere of power that they'd rather let the entire world go to hell than face reality.

Good literary analogies—I'd add a touch of Yeats in there too.
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

"the worst
Are full of passionate intensity."

Gosh, yes. That's the real problem, I think. The overpowering rage, and drive, and energy, and determination of the haters.

Considering the era when Yeats wrote those lines, I think he had reason to feel just as we do. They had just gone through the horror of WWI. Europe was in shatters and had no center of stability. The Fascist movement had begun—it was a scary time. This is too!
