I'm going to be sooooo glad to see the back of 2016. George Michael, Carrie Fisher, Prince.... We've lost people who have given the world so much joy and pleasure, and put an absolute monster into a position of absolute power.

We did lose a lot of memorable people this year. Authors Saul Bellow, Maya Angelou, Elie Wiesel, Harper Lee, Edward Albee, and Leonard Cohen, Tom Clancy.

I met Wiesel at Yale in the late 60's. The occasion was a friend's wedding and I had just assigned Wiesel's book Night to my sophomore classes. We had quite a discussion; he was a delightful man—brilliant, gentle, and very kind to a fledgling teacher.
