This an unbelievable real story: It’s a man’s world — for one peer reviewer, at least

Ingleby, a postdoc in evolutionary genetics at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom, co-wrote an article on gender differences in the transition from PhD-dom to postdoc land and submitted it to a journal for consideration. What she heard back was lamentably ironic — and grossly sexist.

First there was only ONE reviewer?!. And this is what the reviewer wrote as conclusion as posted by Fiona Ingleby on twitter:

The reviewer also made the following comments:

Apparently this was a paper submitted to a PLOS journal and the two authors complained 3 weeks ago without any reply. After posting on twitter a PLOS editor wrote on Retraction Watch comments:
PLOS regrets the tone, spirit and content of this particular review. We take peer review seriously and are diligently and expeditiously looking into this matter. The appeal is in process. PLOS allows Academic Editors autonomy in how they handle manuscripts, but we always follow up if concerns are raised at any stage of the process. Our appeals policy also means that any complaints of the review process can be fully addressed and the author given opportunity to have their paper re-reviewed.

Also PLOS apologized publicly on twitter:
PLOS regrets the tone, content and spirit of this review; your appeal is in process & we're reviewing the matter.

Yup. Imagine demanding including women in men's authored papers because bias .

I see a follow=up paper, where she posits a theory as wto why men have more publications because men get to free-load on a woman's paper when journal reviewers demand male authors on papers. She has at least one data point.

It's incidents like this, which keep happening all the bloody time to women, that really make me angry when people say sexism isn't a real thing. Point is, you would never get a male reviewer telling a male researcher to put other men on his work to give it more credibility. But even though men aren't subjected to sexism, how can they not know it exists unless they choose to ignore, dismiss, or condone it?

This reminded me of a quote from Inge Lehmann in the Somthsonian's SmartNews that I read yesterday:
Lehmann was also an advocate for women in the sciences at a time when they struggled to be taken seriously in a male-dominated field. While she was educated at Denmark’s first co-ed school, her nephew once quoted her as saying, “You should know how many incompetent men I had to compete with—in vain.”

It's the same-old, same-old, over and over again.
