Online Book Stores

Baker wrote:This thread is for links to online book stores and any comments you have about using them.

I'm not listing Amazon because of their track record of anti-gay actions and their strong-arm tactics against authors and publishers. People who want to use them can easily find them.

I'm not listing ABE because they're owned by Amazon.

I was wondering if we could also gather a little bit more information about these online bookstores, for example what kind of payment do they accept (credit card, paypal, etc), whether they ship all over the world and how fast they are.

Better World Books, for example says "Free Shipping in the USA, $3.97 Worldwide." As to time frame, I figure on a couple of weeks to get books from them. And that's within the same country, of course. They have new and used and will tell you what they have "in stock" for each. They seem to use shippers/bookstores all around the country. Haven't quite gotten a handle on that. I've ordered both new and used. Most recently I'm trying their Marketplace (which I'm not that sure what the difference is between that and Used, but I think these seem to be used bookstores. So, for example, for one book, I chose a shipper within my state. Will see if that's faster.)

Ah:
Marketplace books are used or new books sold and shipped by independent booksellers. They may take longer to arrive than books shipped directly from Better World Books.

They say:
International (10-21 business days, no tracking available)
International Priority (5-14 business days, no tracking available)

Payment by credit card, check, or PayPal.

Prices seem to vary wildly. A used book can be marked higher than a new one (it seems, though maybe I'm comparing pb to hardcover).

Anyway, I like their eco-friendliness (assuming it's legit) and my boss recommended them.

They now take Paypal as well as credit cards.

I don't know about shipping elsewhere, but in the US it's $3.99 for the first book plus $2.19 for each additional book. Or, do as I do, wait until you have an order over $49 and get free shipping.

ElaineB wrote:I'm about to find out how good Better World Books' return policy is. I ordered three books. Two came (one was the reading challenge, thankfully, although now I feel guilty that I bought it used  ), but one was the wrong book. I'd ordered it through the Marketplace from a Mass. bookstore. I've emailed them to see how to get the exchange done and here I wait...

Let's see how fast they are...

HH wrote:I ordered several books from Better Book World (straight from them, not via the marketplace) and two from Book Depo, one of which wasn't yet released. The not-yet-released one* is, so far, the only book that has arrived at my house  So yeah, I'm waiting to see how the two compare for speed and accuracy.

*Ash, by Melinda Lo -- a YA fantasy. So far I'm quite enjoying it.

For the Brits. This lot are in Cornwall and they take cheques and postal orders(quaint, its been yonks since I used a po for a purchase)...oh, and paypal, too.

I've never actually used them but a friend got some really hard to find stuff there (like Keira Dellacroix Ice Hole and the other one by her..forget the title - sorry). She did the entire transaction over the phone, sent them a cheque and later they posted the books to a friend in Sweden for her. A very personal service and my friend recommends them.
