Marketing is what the publisher does (or ought to, anyhow). That means sending ARCs out to reviewers three to six months before the book is released. Getting the book into catalogues that go to booksellers (the bookstore staff who make the buying decisions as to what they will stock). Buying ads in trade magazines. Buying front shelf space at bookstores. Etc.

Promotion
is what the author does. That means having an online and real world presence that lets her directly interact with readers in such a way that readers will want to buy her books. Note, that does not mean spamming email lists and limiting her online activity to "here's my book! Buy it!" More along the lines of being an interesting, useful, entertaining, helpful, or otherwise likeable person so that when she occasionally mentions her book or posts a snippet of a chapter or shows her latest cover art, readers who already like her and follow her for other reasons will be enticed to buy her book.

Anyhow, here's a great post by an author discussing what she found worked (and what didn't work) wrt promotion. Bookmarks, postcards, and ARC giveaways seem to be the way to go.

There’s lots of other stuff you can do (blog tours, preorder contests, custom swag, and on and on), and they do indeed help. But for me, they sucked a lot of time and enthusiasm, and I’ve chosen to focus most of my energies on bookmarks, postcards, and giveaways moving forward. If you’re pressed for time and/or pinching pennies, I suggest considering one or all of these options yourself.

That was very interesting. I "let go" of a book when I finish editing it. I expect the author's work never really stops if they want to sell it.
