Sales and earnings

Postby FranW » 23 Jun 2011, 10:05

Since it's bloody hard to find any information about how much an author can expect to earn with a particular publisher, or how many copies a book is likely to sell, let's stick snippets of info here whenever we run across it.

Datum point #1:
Author: Anne Brooke,
# books published: 6
Title: Maloney's Law
Publisher: P D Publishing
Genre: crime/gay male
Year published: 2008
Format(s) released: trade paperback
Earnings: $360
Time period: 3 years

Shite. That's lousy sales. Either it sucks, it was marketed poorly, or just with the wrong publisher. I didn't even know PD did gay fiction.

Lousy sales for a small press book, or lousy for PD? It works out to around 300 copies sold, I think: isn't that fairly typical for PD?

IIRC, part of the author's complaint is that they never got around to releasing it in ebook format (which is more lucrative for the author) yet their contract cancellation fee was ungodly high because they were projecting something like $5000 in future e-book sales for that title.

As in lousy sales all around.

I don't see how they can project that much sales for a book that in 3 yrs made less than $400.

If you think that one book costs $16.95 USD, that comes out to roughly just 21 books in 3 yrs. Hell, BGCFA sells that still per quarter.

It's those ebooks! All three have print editions but those sales a sooo much smaller...
And IN KESHIA'S SHADOW is barely selling in either format. Dunno if it's story, the cover, the different publisher or what.

YA is a different market, and the lesfic presses aren't really set up to target it.
