Markets other then romance

Postby pokiepup » 22 Dec 2012, 15:31

Hello everyone. I was just wondering if there was a market for LGBT fiction when it isn't just romance. Maybe I've just been under a rock but every book I've found which is very few (library has a small selection) have been 95 % romance and 5 % coming out. What I'm writing is sorta along the lines of Lost Girl, only diffrent plot and so on also focuses on the two main female pairing and all that (suck at suming it up) but I'm just wondering is there a market for somthing that isn't only romance???

There are markets for mysteries, and historicals, and general fiction, but romances sell the most. Try looking up the nominee lists for the Lambda Literary Awards and the Golden Crown Literary Society Awards, and notice the categories they use. Seeing which publishers have books in various categories can be useful.

As Sacchi said, romance is the overwhelmingly biggest seller, but that's true for mainstream/het fiction as well.

What's Lost Girl?

Do you write short fiction or novel-length?

A Canadian TV show (Lost Girl).

Doccubus! (And since I can't find a small picture, I'll just post a link instead of posting the actual picture: Doctor+Succubus.)

Ah. We don't have that show here.

It sounds like you're writing urban fantasy, then? Humans in our world/our time interacting with the occasional werewolf/vampire/witch/whatever. That's a very popular genre right now.

There is definitely a market for non romance LGBT, but it's a bit buried beneath all the mushy stuff sorta. I write science fiction/fantasy lesbian stoof, and it's one of my goals to make the spec fic a little more pronounced. Bit by bit I hope!

And yeah, paranormal/urban fantasy is very popular right now, so I'd say you actually have a good shot with that.
