Shimmer -- thanks to Sacchi for the market tip!

Publisher: Shimmer
Seeking: short stories
Genre: spec fic, particulary contemporary fantasy
Theme: "dark, strange, funny or all three"
Length: maximum 5,000 words
Payment: now paying pro rates (5 cents/word)

full info here: http://www.shimmerzine.com/guidelines/f ... uidelines/

The increase in pay rates is in response to the Weird Tales debacle as explained here: http://www.maryrobinettekowal.com/journ ... pro-rates/

(Potted version: established author self-published a SF novel that in which the black "Coals" rule over and cruelly discriminate against the white "Pearls", one of whom falls in love with a Coal described as a 'beast-man'. Book got ripped for being racist. Author had hissy fits and said it couldn't be racist because she doesn't even know any black people, and black readers don't exist, and once when she was a little girl someone made fun of her curly hair so she knows all about being discriminated against. The new editor of Weird Tales, which for nearly a century has been one of the biggest, best, most admired and award-winning spec fic magazine on the planet, decided to publish the first chapter of this SF book even though the former editor warned them not to because it was racist. The editor announced on the Weird Tales website that it was a great book and that Amazon reviewers who panned it as racist lacked intelligence, literary acumen, etc. Major backlash, with lots of authors pulling their stories etc. The owner of Weird Tales then announced they wouldn't publish it after all and that the book was in fact racist, and the editor had changed his mind and agreed it was racist, so now would everyone please stop being mean to them. Other magazines are now saying they'll happily take submissions from the authors who are pulling their stories from Weird Tales.)

Editing to add: Mary Robinette Kowal, an author and the previous art director of Shimmer, is underwriting the pay increase for short story writers herself. That's how passionate she feels about this. She sounds like a she-ro to me!

Fran thinks Elaine should sub her zombie/werewolf Secret Santa story here!
