Word Count Widgets and Doohickeys

Two problems thus far: (1) finding one that works with the phpBB code this forum uses. Even if this site does accept html, I do not recommend using it and will encourage anyone who does to switch to one that isn't html based. At the end, I will list the ones that use Java or html as the basis for their meters but will only cover the ones that I can convert to phpBB code. (2) finding one that isn't terribly image dependent, meaning it will crash on or about Nov. 3rd.

So far, I've only found one. But it is one I am very familiar with and has never failed me.

Writertopia has had their word meters for, like, years. Their "Picometer" is minimalist but works great. Here is how to do it in phpBB format.

Code: Select all
http://picometer.writertopia.com/words=1000&target=50000

Okay, now see the number after words= ? That's how many words you have written so far.

See the number after target= ? That's your goal.

Now you put that URL between the image tags.

Code: Select all
[img]http://picometer.writertopia.com/words=1000&target=50000[/img]

And you should get this:

Image

So just copy/paste the above line and input your own numbers. If you wish to use it for your own website (this is the meter I use) using html, this is the code for that:

Code: Select all
<img src="http://picometer.writertopia.com/words=1000&target=20000">

**

Here's some others to consider for use on your own website: (I've not used either of them)

http://honorless.net/progressbar.htm - It is about as minimal as you can get. Since it is not image dependent, I don't see it crashing unless everyone comes to the site at once to get the latest code. As to the code itself, it is a little bloated but I guess it has to be since it must be flexible enough to fit any website.

http://languageisavirus.com/nanowrimo/word-meter.html - I've looked at the code it generates. Like the one above, it could use some pruning but it is clean looking.
Take a deep breath and count to zen.

Yeah, next to the vodka.

I checked, and we do happen to have a bottle in there (wonder how old it is??). Do freezers now come with one? "Included: ice maker and Smirnoff"
